My first instagram post was a picture I took of this Maya Angelou sculpture at the ‘Remember Them: Champions for Humanity’ bronze monument in Uptown Oakland.
I remember rushing from work during my lunch to the unveiling ceremony in October 2011, hoping to meet her because she was scheduled to speak. She was too ill to make the trip to California at the time, so her son showed up in her absence. I was so sad, thinking it was probably my last and only opportunity to see her speak live. I was right.
I love this monument though. In the cluster of humanitarians which is designed as a sort of Mt. Rushmore of heroes, her likeness is the only one that stands alone (with Ruby Bridges behind and to the bottom left of her). So proud of my city for honoring her. #Oakland (at Uptown Oakland)
